MY NAME IS LAURA WATMOUGH
I will teach you the fastest, most successful and comprehensive way to learn to paint realistically!
I am one of those fortunate people who hasn’t worked a day in my life- it is always a pleasure (not a job) to be surrounded by and mentor those that are involved in the creative process. I enjoy sharing my excitement and passion with others so they too can fearlessly create works of art. I found my love of painting was equally matched to my love of sharing (teaching).
WE SHOULD TALK…
- if you are scared stiff or haven’t touched a brush since grade school!
- if you think you would like to learn to paint and be proud of the results!
- if not being able to draw has held you back!
- if you want to paint at the next level!
- if you want to learn what other art schools wouldn’t teach you!
- if you want a wonderfully supportive community of fellow student artists!
My own creative journey covered many mediums- drawing, water color, dye on rice paper, mixed media, acrylics and oils. I have painted an amazing variety of subjects as well. Some of my favorites are wine and food, scenery, and still life. I have had numerous national and international gallery exhibitions, special event art displays and commissions.
I advocate learning the traditional fundamentals of art – values, edges, shapes! I enjoy introducing the scared stiff to them in a contemporary way.
HIDDEN TALENT STARTED IN 1995 AT MY KITCHEN TABLE.
When art funding was cut from schools a few of the mothers convinced me to start teaching their children. In a very short time I have full classes and moved my ‘class room’ into the front room.
CHILDREN TEENS AND ADULTS AND FRAMING
The word was out- I was teaching all mediums to the children and teens and started water color and dye on rice paper instructions for adults. In the meantime I received a grant to enroll in a professional framers course.
INTERNATIONAL ART SHOWS AND A BIG MOVE
I was chosen to participate in an art exchange with a group of artists from Wales. I also exhibited in Indiana and Chicago. In Alberta I was selected for traveling shows and was juried into the Alberta Society of Artists. Many more art show in provincial and commercial galleries followed.
More and more students were finding their way to my door- I was know as the lady who taught art in her house. Needless to say it was time to find a bigger space! I moved Hidden Talent to a new 2000 squ. ft. studio in an industrial park close to home. (November 2002) It was fantastic to have a real studio, a front gallery and an area for framing! (and for my own collection of paintings!)
SPOTLIGHT ON THE STUDENTS
Having a gallery was very exciting! We have had many shows, annual Christmas art parties and special events. Students were also invited to participate in a juried art exhibition at a prestigious Edmonton gallery. Hidden Talent artists have been winners TWICE in the International ‘Torrit Grey Competition-a first! Many of our students are approached for commission work.
Every spring the Hidden Talent sponsors student art displays at the St. Albert Trade Show that attracts over 10,000 people! We love to see the visitors turn the corner and see their mouth drop! It is gratifying for the students to see their utter amazement!
I was thrilled to be nominated and then win the Mayor’s Award for ” EXCELLENCE IN ART TEACHING” in 2013. CTV also approached me and asked if I would do 5 ‘infomercials ‘ or LEARNING CONNECTORS , BLACK AND WHITE, DEPTH , NEGATIVE SPACE , 3D about art. I loved the process of seeing what actually happens behind the camera.
HIDDEN TALENT ART TRIPS TO EUROPE
We have enjoyed traveling to ITALY (!) and PARIS (!) with adult students. Our Tour Guide, my wonderful husband Ed, has made these amazing once-in-a-lifetime trips ‘line up’ and ‘worry’ free! We plan to find an art adventure every year! Artist of all skill levels love the ease of doing watercolor sketches abroad as well as being immersed in the local culture!
CUSTOM ART PRINTS AND PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS SUPPLIES
Once our artists have finished their artwork many have gicless or gallery quality canvas prints made to meet the demand. In 2014 I was able to offer this service as well as carry art supplies from Richeson’s at reasonable prices.
SPECIALTY WORKSHOPS-INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL ARTISTS
International artists travel to Hidden Talent to instruct week long workshops. Students are able to connect personally with accomplished and famous artists.
I have offered drawing, speed painting , plein air and other courses for those that wish to further develop their style and painting skills.
